About the Course

County Sligo Golf Club

County Sligo Golf Club was founded in 1894 at Rosses Point, a peninsula that juts into Sligo Bay on the northwest coast of Ireland. The course was redesigned by H.S. Colt — one of the greatest golf architects of the early twentieth century — and his layout has stood the test of time as one of the finest links in the northwest.

The course is set against one of the most dramatic backdrops in Irish golf. Benbulben — the flat-topped mountain that dominates the Sligo landscape and inspired W.B. Yeats — rises to the northeast, while Sligo Bay stretches to the south and the Atlantic opens to the west. The views from the higher holes are extraordinary, and the natural terrain provides a test that is both fair and memorable.

County Sligo has hosted the West of Ireland Championship — one of the most prestigious amateur events in Irish golf — for over a century, and the club has produced some of Ireland's finest amateur golfers. The course is a genuine championship links, demanding in the wind and rewarding to those who play with patience and local knowledge.

Why It Stands Out

I

The Benbulben Backdrop

No course in Ireland has a more dramatic backdrop than County Sligo. Benbulben — the flat-topped mountain that inspired W.B. Yeats and defines the Sligo landscape — rises to the northeast, and the views from the higher holes are among the most extraordinary in Irish golf.

II

H.S. Colt Design

H.S. Colt — the architect behind Sunningdale, Wentworth, and Royal Portrush — redesigned County Sligo in the early twentieth century. His layout uses the natural terrain with the strategic intelligence that defines his greatest work, and the course has a balance and variety that rewards repeated play.

III

The West of Ireland Championship

County Sligo has hosted the West of Ireland Championship — one of the most prestigious amateur events in Irish golf — for over a century. The club has a deep tradition of competitive golf and has produced some of Ireland's finest amateur players.

IV

The Northwest Links Experience

County Sligo sits at the heart of Ireland's northwest links corridor — a region that remains largely undiscovered by international visitors. The combination of world-class golf, dramatic scenery, and genuine Irish hospitality makes Rosses Point one of the most rewarding destinations in the country.
