About the Course

Portsalon Golf Club

Portsalon Golf Club was founded in 1891 on the shores of Lough Swilly — one of the great sea loughs of Ireland — in the heart of County Donegal. The course occupies a narrow strip of linksland between the lough and the Atlantic, with views across the water to the Inishowen Peninsula and the hills of Donegal that are simply without equal in Irish golf.

The course was substantially redesigned in the early 2000s, with new holes added to take full advantage of the dramatic terrain. The result is a layout of real variety and character — some holes play along the lough shore, others climb into the dunes above, and the views from the higher ground are breathtaking. It is a course that feels entirely natural and unhurried, as if it has always been part of the landscape.

Portsalon is typically played as part of a Donegal extension alongside Ballyliffin and Rosapenna — three courses that together represent the wild, remote character of north-west Ireland at its finest. The combination of Lough Swilly's tranquil beauty, Ballyliffin's Atlantic drama, and Rosapenna's architectural quality makes for one of the most rewarding golf travel experiences in Ireland.

Why It Stands Out

I

Lough Swilly Setting

Portsalon sits on the shores of Lough Swilly — one of the great sea loughs of Ireland — with views across the water to the Inishowen Peninsula and the hills of Donegal. The setting is one of the most beautiful in Irish golf, combining the tranquility of the lough with the drama of the Atlantic coastline.

II

Hidden Gem of the North-West

Portsalon is not on the mainstream golf travel circuit, and that is precisely its appeal. Getting here requires commitment, and the reward is a links experience that feels entirely undiscovered — a course played by those who know, in a landscape of rare natural beauty.

III

Variety of Terrain

The course moves between lough-shore holes of quiet beauty and elevated dune holes with panoramic views — a variety of terrain that keeps every round fresh and interesting. The redesigned layout makes the most of the dramatic natural topography.

IV

The Perfect Donegal Trio

Portsalon is most naturally played as part of a Donegal trio alongside Ballyliffin and Rosapenna. Together these three courses represent the full range of north-west Irish links golf — from Ballyliffin's championship drama to Rosapenna's architectural quality to Portsalon's quiet, lough-side beauty.

Extend Your Itinerary

Pair It with the Donegal Trio

Portsalon sits 12 miles from Rosapenna and 20 miles from Ballyliffin — the three courses that form the Donegal extension of any Northern Ireland golf itinerary. From here, the route east takes in the Causeway Coast for Royal Portrush, Portstewart, and Castlerock.

How It Is Included

Portsalon is the quieter, more contemplative member of the Donegal trio — paired with Ballyliffin and Rosapenna for a north-west Ireland extension that adds wild remoteness and lough-side beauty to the championship quality of the Causeway Coast. We build it into extended Northern Ireland tours as the perfect conclusion to a week of great links golf.
