About the Course

The Berkshire Golf Club

The Berkshire Golf Club was founded in 1928 and designed by Herbert Fowler — the architect who also created Walton Heath. The club has two courses, the Red and the Blue, both of which are set in the royal forests of Berkshire near Ascot and both of which offer a quality of golf that is among the finest in England.

The Red Course is the more celebrated of the two — a layout of great variety and intelligence that uses the natural heathland terrain with exceptional skill. The Blue Course is a worthy companion, offering a different but equally rewarding test. Playing both courses in a single visit is one of the great experiences in English heathland golf.

The club is private and membership is by invitation, but guest rounds are available through the club's introduction process. The setting — ancient pines, silver birch, heather, and bracken — is among the most beautiful in English golf, and the condition of both courses is consistently outstanding.

The Course

Why It Stands Out

I

Two Courses of Equal Quality

Unlike many clubs where one course clearly outranks the other, The Berkshire's Red and Blue courses are genuinely comparable in quality. Both are outstanding examples of Golden Age heathland design, and both reward repeated play with new discoveries and challenges.

II

Herbert Fowler — The Heathland Master

Herbert Fowler designed both courses at The Berkshire, as well as Walton Heath — making him the dominant architect of the London Heathland region. His work at The Berkshire shows the same intelligence and restraint that characterises his best work, with routing that feels inevitable and green complexes that are subtle and endlessly interesting.

III

The Royal Forest Setting

The Berkshire is set in the ancient royal forests near Ascot, among pines and silver birch that create a landscape of extraordinary beauty. The course is immaculately maintained, and the combination of the forest setting and the quality of the golf makes it one of the most enjoyable rounds in England.

IV

A Genuine Private Club Experience

The Berkshire is a private club in the truest sense — a place where the game is played with care and respect, where the pace of play is unhurried, and where the quality of the experience is paramount. For visitors seeking an authentic English private club experience, it is among the finest options available.
